NEVER A CRIME
From 1 September 2015, Victoria, Australia introduced a new scheme to expunge historical convictions for homosexual activity that would not be a criminal offence today. Never a Crime project was about raising awareness about the Expungement Scheme.
The changes to the Sentencing Act 1991 recognise that homosexual sex between consenting adults should never have been a crime.
About the project
In May 2015 Premier Daniel Andrews issued a formal apology in State Parliament to gay men for past injustices – making Victoria the first state to apologise.
The project invited men who had been historically convicted for homosexual activity, that would not be a criminal offence today, to participate in the workshops and work towards having their crimes expunged.
On 21 January 2018, Never a Crime Exhibition opened at the Abbotsford Convent.
